Lore
The matriarchy
The Fauri are a matriarchal species resembling a cross between ponies and deer. Males are not expected to lead - instead, the females hold every title and position worth having between them, and see no reason that should ever change.
Female Fauri are typically the more aggressive, practical and independent of the sexes: they provide, they decide, and they are expected to make something of themselves. Males exist in their Courts mostly for decoration - social, showy individuals who live for attention, and are rarely asked for anything more.
Male Fauri in Society
A male's job is to grow his hair long, look pretty, and give healthy faunlings to carry on a female's legacy. Most take it very seriously - hours go into grooming, and many work twigs, leaves and blossoms into their hair for better luck in catching an eye.
A male who neglects his looks is thought careless at best, while one who is plain through no fault of his own - through genetics, brittle hair, or dull colouring - gets sympathy: which is worse.
Males with careers
Nothing strictly forbids a male from taking up a trade - but it's considered frivolous, or even funny. A male's work is treated as a sweet little hobby - something to keep him busy between brushings - and nobody expects him to stick at it.
